The Early Childhood Education and Family Center, located in the east side of Columbus, Ohio, is a collaborative initiative of the Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities Early Childhood program. Over 700 typically-developing children & those with developmental disabilities attend ECEFC and range in age from 6 months to 6 years. Existing features include several spaces for growing vegetables and fruits, courtyard play garden spaces for the classrooms, a digging pit, a large play barn, and multiple swing and climbing structures. All spaces are designed to be accessible for children with all levels of ability, and to provide opportunities for safe, secure, creative sensory interaction with nature.
Ongoing programming by staff members, Local Matters and Farmer Paul and Farmer Molly provide continuous opportunities for education and development for children around growing and preparing fresh ingredients from the garden. Multiple volunteer groups provide community maintenance support for the outdoor spaces.
