Belize City, Belize District, Belize
Our day kicked off yesterday (February 19th 2017) at 6am at the Belize Audubon Society’s main office. The Scouts were divided into 4 teams and assigned with an experienced local birder for some bird watching fun. Our thirty eight friends were fired up and ready to learn about birds and participate in this year’s Great Backyard Bird count! Belize Audubon Society’s staff, and the different teams were deployed to different areas in Belize city: (Fort Street into Marine Parade, North Park into Eyre Street, BTL park, and St. John’s College).
Lead birders were excited to share their birding knowledge with our young citizen scientists. The Scouts and their leaders enjoyed spotting various birds and were amazed by the diversity of birds they could see by just taking some time to observe and listen to their surroundings. Highlights of the day included Vermilion flycatchers, Olive-throated Parakeets, Orchard Orioles, Brown Pelicans and Spotted Sandpipers. Our friends enjoyed this new adventure and look forward to more birding!
