Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Dane County is on a mission to "inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident" by having fun and integrating running/walking into lifestyles. One of GOTR's core values is to "nuture our physical, emotional, and spiritual health" by building bonds of friendship with each other and community connections. Lincoln Elementary's GOTR team works together to find ways to learn about ourselves, connect to each other, and give back to our community.
In honor of Earth Day 2014, Lincoln's GOTR team decided to help a brand-new Community Garden get off the ground! The garden is at the South Central Federation of Labor (SCFL), an organization promoting working people's issues. SCFL's goal is to have a true Community Garden: one in which no one owns a particular plot, but instead everyone works together in solidarity and reaps a harvest together.
Girls enthusiastically ran to the new garden at SCFL in a steady drizzle of cold rain. The Team worked in the raised beds pulling weeds, turning the soil, and rescuing worms. Girls were energized and excited to run in the rain, get muddy, save worms, and run back to school!
We plan to return for planting in another week. We are hopeful some of the local girls can continue to work the garden during the summer, even when school is out, because it is free and in the neighborhood. We also hope that our Fall 2014 Team is interested in helping harvest some of our work!
