A-Z Birds: From Albatross to Zebra Finch

Learning the alphabet is truly the ultimate foundation and assures a student’s success in school and beyond. But why fall into the tired rut of “A is for apple” when you could put learning the alphabet into a fresh context? Instead, entertain your students by teaching the alphabet through some of the magnificent birds that you see in your own backyard and beyond.

We were inspired to compile an alphabet of (mostly) North American birds that you can easily incorporate into your alphabet learning unit. Using this fun list, you can teach all of the learning outcomes for the alphabet: name knowledge, letter sound knowledge, letter name fluency, letter sound fluency, and letter writing. In addition, you can spark an interest in and appreciation for nature in your students through awareness of their local birds. Your students can also learn some new vocabulary words with the short and memorable alliterations that accompany each letter.

Check back each Tuesday for the next letter and bird species. We hope you enjoy this alphabet from Albatross to Zebra Finch!

Very cool! I will recommend this page to a teacher I know here in Vieques who is teaching English to native Spanish speakers at a Montessori school.

When I click on the nuthatch, nothing happens. DOubleclicking on the others allows me to print the bird for my students to color, while referring to photographs.

Hi Mary. Clicking on the nuthatch should lead to the full image file, now.
